During his first live broadcast on Gilga Radio, Donald Glover announced information about two new albums, the second of which will be the last Childish Gambino album.
The rather candid conversation kicks off Glover’s latest radio show on Instagram, “Gilga,” in which the artist talks about the casual approach to the release of his last project, 3.15.20, and what it feels like in the modern streaming age Defects.
He went on to talk about the re-preparation of the album, emphasizing that it will be released as a revamped album under the name Atavista. He also acknowledged the failure of its first iteration, and that the timestamp-based track nomenclature on 3.15.20 was not the way most people consumed music. He further revealed how he abandoned the project without thorough mixing and mastering amid the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic, and that Atavista will be a more polished software package. Yes, that also means a special edition Atavista vinyl is about to be released, along with a Hiro-directed music video for “Little Foot, Big Foot ft. Young Nudy” set to be released in the coming weeks.

The rapper then gently announced a new final project being developed by Childish Gambino, which will serve as the original soundtrack for the film titled “Bando Stone and The New World.” Full of familiar Gambino-esque confidence, Glover spoke about this being a project he’s always wanted to work on, and in addition to these full-length musical projects, fans can also expect to see Donald Glover x Zach Fox’s animation, as well as an animated show called “City Mouse, Country Mouse.” Excitingly, Glover also teased some unreleased songs that can be heard here.
On a more introspective topic, Glover also talked about his rap persona “Childish Gambino,” revealing that RZA from Wu-Tang Clan worked on one of his formative albums and how he incorporated Gambino Nuo’s story is regarded as one of the stories of “a boy becoming a boy”. The artist is convinced of this, stressing that the whole point of the Childish Gambino persona is not to act like an adult in his music.
He further weighed in on the “Big Three” feud and his place in the story, describing himself as a “court jester” who stayed away from the hustle and bustle and tried to have fun. “Fuck the culture,” he said. “This culture makes people afraid to wear sandals. What are we doing? Are you afraid to show your toes? Everybody does! Why are we subject to this thing that wants us to fight?” Glover then commented on Chicago’s How people are dying over real beef and everyone has to ask themselves what they want from the top and whether it’s about the bar or about expression.
