“They must be picky.”
A woman says she was denied entry to a popular Miami Beach restaurant/club because her shorts were too long. However, she claimed she saw several other women wearing similar outfits walk right in.
In a recent video, @itz.jskayy explains that she and her friends arrived at Miami Beach Joya wearing what they considered to be the dress code attire. She said that despite her efforts to comply with the dress code, a security guard turned her away for violating the dress code.
“Joia Beach just told me I couldn’t get in because the shorts were too long,” @itz.jskayy said.
“This doesn’t even make sense”
Joia Beach is an oceanfront restaurant and beach club located on Miami’s Jungle Island. Its menu is Mediterranean and it is known not only for its food but also for its beach club atmosphere. In addition, there are strict clothing requirements.
While the bouncer denied entry to @itz.jskayy and her friends, allegedly because of what they were wearing, they said they saw him allow other women wearing very similar attire into the venue.
“When I tell you, about two or three people with the same length of shorts as mine walked in and told me I couldn’t go in because of my shorts?” she said. She said her friend questioned the decision, saying the explanation didn’t hold up.
“Then he wanted to start arguing with my friend because my friend was like, ‘That doesn’t make sense. Her shorts are covering her booty.'” Why on earth are you all so strict-[expletive] What is the dress code if you haven’t even said what exactly it is? ” she said.
According to @itz.jskayy, she visited Joia Beach the night before and asked about the dress code. She said a staff member told her that while swimsuits were not allowed, regular clothes were OK until 5 p.m.
“We came in here last night and we knew we couldn’t wear bathing suits, but they did say we could wear regular clothes and come in before 5 p.m.,” she said. “It’s weird because [expletive]”. She can be seen almost in tears in the video.
“Miami is always picking”
Viewers were quick to weigh in on the situation.
“Yeah, Miami is always picking. I wore this in front of Joia and it felt good,” one commenter said, along with a photo of them in bikinis with mesh tops.
“This is a boo to the whole outfit. I’m telling everyone, if you want that privilege in Miami, you have to know style or it’s all going to be hit or miss,” said another.
“Don’t argue with anyone about spending money on things you don’t need,” someone said.
“It’s a total fit…it would fit somewhere in Atlanta, not Miami,” another noted.
“Isn’t joia a beach club??? I’m confused,” asked another, to which @itz.jskayy replied, “Exactly.”
“I’m sorry, I see the hurt in your eyes. I don’t understand why people like Miami, the energy there is terrible,” another comment expressed sympathy.
As of this writing, the video has received 399,400 views and 41,000 likes.
What is the dress code at Joia Beach?
According to Joia Beach’s website, the venue follows a “European-style, upscale beach fashion” dress code. The website states that “appropriate attire” is required to enter, and management reserves the right to deny admission or ask guests to leave if they do not meet the dress code.
However, the site doesn’t provide clear examples of what clothing is and isn’t allowed, and “European-style high-end beach fashion” is pretty vague. Oddly, the website is specific about certain aspects of the clothing requirements. For example, it states that “fishnet blouses, offensive clothing, sportswear, hoodies, sweatpants, tank tops, overalls and slippers with socks are not allowed in any area of the venue.” However, nowhere does it say shorts are not allowed.
It appears that enforcement of the dress code rests with the discretion of the guards. Judging from the photos of people commenting on what they were wearing, the dress code appears to be arbitrary.
