Boston Roxbury, MA veteran Edo.G joins forces with Los Angeles beat maestro Tone Spliff for his fifth EP. Signed to Mercury Records as the leader of Ed OG and Da Bulldogs, who released 2 albums together before disbanding, Ed himself eventually established himself as a solo artist, releasing 4 EPs and 10 full-length LPs. My favorites are his third album My Own Worst Enemy (produced by Pete Rock) and his sixth album After All These Years. However, after learning that Tone had jumped onto the board of AudioO EDibles, expectations for what would become Edo’s best EP increased.
After the title intro, the first song, “Catch Up,” gets us talking some ominous boom bap shit about building this empire, while “Act of God” plays into those orchestral elements, on kick drum and snare drum Ask who else you know who could accomplish such a feat. “Another Broken Heart” flips a soul sample, advising listeners not to be stupid and let them break your heart, while the piano-driven “Hard 2 Get” talks about a woman who’s hard to get hold of. “Achieve” keeps the heat going, explaining the inability of closed minds to open, leading to the luxurious “Someday” calling for an end to gun violence, but then “Move Mountains” does it right as a dusty closer as it gets right into the air. area.
Edo.G’s self-titled collaboration with Insight Innovates a few years ago confirmed to me that the two of them still weren’t a step behind, and ever since I’ve been hoping for a solo effort from him that I would enjoy as much as possible. Audio EDibles, I can say got the job done. The production of Tone Spliff gives Ed some of his best work in a while, with the foundation being a traditional boom bap sound, while the Roxbury emcee’s lyrics provide thought-provoking themes throughout.
