Hip-hop has lost one of its defining architects. Grammy-nominated producer Tay Keith was found deceased in his Nashville apartment Thursday afternoon during a welfare check, Metro Police confirmed. He was 29.
Authorities stated no foul play is suspected, but an official investigation into the cause of death is underway. The news sent shockwaves through the industry within minutes of breaking.
Keith’s fingerprints are all over the last decade of rap. The Memphis native crafted the ominous bounce behind Travis Scott’s diamond-certified “Sicko Mode,” Drake’s “Nonstop,” BlocBoy JB’s “Look Alive,” and countless other anthems that shifted the sound of mainstream trap.
Tributes poured in immediately. Drake posted a tribute to his Instagram story, calling Keith “a genius gone too soon.” Travis Scott, Lil Baby, and dozens of producers shared memories of sessions and milestones.
The tragedy was compounded by timing. As news broke, Sexyy Red’s label issued a statement addressing legal allegations that Keith was owed back-payments for production work, though they did not connect the dispute to his passing.
At 29, Tay Keith had already built a Hall of Fame resume. His death leaves a void in hip-hop’s sound and a generation of artists without their go-to hitmaker.
