Wendy Williams retained high-profile attorney Joe Tacopina as her personal attorney to end her court orders.
Tacopina is known for being famous figures, including A$AP Rocky in the gun raid trial last February and Meek Mill in the epic probation war.
In an interview with TMZ on April 3, the lawyer confirmed that he was actively working to participate in the legal process that oversees Williams’ custody.
Tacopina stressed that his main goal was to ensure Williams was released from her restricted New York facility.
He described her current living conditions as not suitable for her mental state and pointed out that she was not incapacitated and was not part of an institution that could not take care of her own personal design.
“She’s in a ward where people don’t know their name, people don’t know between the red and the green light,” Tacopina said. “I mean, she’s in a place where people are in danger to themselves. She’s not. She can’t leave there alone for a cup of coffee.”

Although Tacopina was retained as Williams’ personal attorney, he has not officially entered the custody case due to legal obstacles.
“The judge must approve any lawyer entering custody,” he explained, noting that it was a barrier to his preparation to challenge.
Tacopina has begun filing lawsuits to obtain the case and has other legal options, and if his lawsuit is rejected, there are other courts available.
“There’s a process,” he said. It almost sounds ridiculous if for some reason the judge doesn’t allow us to be custody of Wendy’s first-choice lawyer, but it’s obviously stupid to try and argue that she doesn’t have any ability or ability to choose her own lawyer. But if they do, we can file a new lawsuit anytime, anywhere, or we may be sentenced to a certain lawsuit, which is actually a judgment, which is actually a judgment, which is actually a judgment.
Tacopina stressed the urgency of the situation, asserting that Williams was unjustly held in a facility where she did not belong.
He refuted the claims that she suffered from frontotemporal dementia, attributed past concerns about health to the struggle with alcoholism, which he said she had overcome.
He also stressed that Wendy Williams had a great performance in medical evaluation, further supporting his argument that she did not need a guardian.
This legal battle is a rising reason for the social media movement that advocates Williams’ freedom.
Fans launched the #FreeWendy campaign, which has attracted attention on social media platforms, calling for the end of her custody.
The movement mobilized protests in New York and Los Angeles, with supporters demanding an end to what they call unfair prisons.
The protests took place on April 1 outside Coterie Hudson Yards in New York and on Williams’ Hollywood Celebrity Tour. Organizers claim Williams plans to express support for the movement from within her assisted living facilities.
Her family also responded to Williams’ push for independence, who publicly criticized custody. They launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise $50,000 to cover legal expenses and support her fight for autonomy.
Wendy Williams, who has been under custody since 2022, has been sticking to his spirit and should be allowed to manage his own affairs.
Tacopina’s involvement marks a major shift in her legal strategy as she intensifies her struggle to regain control of her life.
“The most important thing is that she needs to get out of there, not later,” said Joe Tacopina. “There’s a chore there every day.”
