President Trump said he planned to watch the NBA Finals after the New York Knicks reached their first championship series since 1999.
Trump made the announcement during a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday.
He said he was invited to attend a game at Madison Square Garden but had to cancel his original Wednesday plans because the schedule was quickly ending.
“I’ve been invited by a lot of people, and Jim and I thought I would go,” Trump said, referring to Jim Dolan, who owns and operates Madison Square Garden. “It’s awesome. It’s great to see it.”
The Knicks defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference Finals and advanced to the NBA Finals.
They will face the San Antonio Spurs or Oklahoma City Thunder, with some games taking place at Madison Square Garden.
Trump praised the Knicks’ roster and their recent success.
“They’ve got some good players. I thought I’d go to a game,” he said. “The Knicks have really, really been suffering for a number of years.”
Dolan was described by Trump as “a great guy” who played an important role in the team’s turnaround. The Knicks’ return to the Finals marks a significant moment for the franchise after decades of disappointment.
