David Jonson officially enters the Marvel Cinematic Universe as T’Challa’s son, opening a new chapter in the Black Panther legend under the leadership of Ryan Coogler.
Black Panther is back.
David Jonson has stepped into the Marvel spotlight as the next generation of Wakanda after Marvel Studios officially announced that he will play T’Challa’s son in Black Panther 3 .
The highly anticipated sequel will be released on December 15, 2028.
The news was announced during San Diego Comic-Con, with director Ryan Coogler confirmed to be returning to direct the third installment alongside Letitia Wright, who will reprise her role as Shuri. The new film will center on the development of T’Challa’s son, marking a major shift in one of Marvel’s most famous franchises.

Jonson is a British actor who has appeared in several notable feature films, most notably Rye Lane (2023), Alien: Romulus (2024) and The Long Walk (2025).
The death of Chadwick Boseman marks the end of the original King T’Challa, who starred in 2018’s “Black Panther.” Boseman died of colon cancer in 2020 at the age of 43. Coogler was forced to reshape the future of the series without reinventing the beloved actor.
Wright’s Shuri in “Black Panther: Waganda Forever” takes up the mantle of Black Panther, allowing the story to pay homage to Boseman’s legacy. T’Challa’s son provides a bridge between the franchise’s past and future.
Few superhero series can match the cultural and commercial impact of Black Panther.
The original film grossed $1.3 billion worldwide and was nominated for seven Oscars, including Best Picture. It was the first superhero film to gain recognition in the category. It ultimately won Oscars for Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, and Best Original Score.
The sequel also proved to be a huge success. “Black Panther: Waganda Forever” was released in 2022 and grossed $859 million at the global box office and $331 million at the global box office, making it one of the strongest opening weekends in the post-pandemic era.
The film also earned five Oscar nominations, including Angela Bassett’s historic Best Supporting Actress nod, the first acting nomination for an actor in a Marvel Studios film.
Letitia Wright will once again don the Black Panther suit in “Avengers: Doomsday,” which is expected to be released on December 18.
