AllHipHop was honored at VBS Fest and has been regarded as pioneering media for nearly three decades.
AllHipHop takes place in Wilmington, Del., with a hometown tribute as the second annual VBS Music Festival honors the groundbreaking hip-hop media platform’s nearly three decades of influence on cultural journalism and entrepreneurship.
VBS Fest turns the spotlight on the individuals and organizations working behind the scenes to strengthen communities and preserve culture. This annual event brings together music lovers, educators, executives and local leaders for an afternoon of performance, recognition and friendship. There are also numerous performers.
Created by Wilmington native and educator Philip “P-Dot 57” Davis, VBS Fest has quickly grown into a staple event in the community. The event combines a block party atmosphere with live hip-hop performances, food vendors and recognition of individuals whose work goes beyond entertainment.
This year’s honorees represent cultural movers and shakers in diverse fields. In addition to AllHipHop, the list includes Philly rap veteran Freeway, Roc Nation executive Young Guru (who was not in attendance), LNGS, Erin Hutt, Chris Fullman, India Sage and legendary Delaware MC Grand G.
For AllHipHop, this recognition holds special meaning.
Founded in 1998 by Chuck “Jigsaw” Creekmur and Grouchy Greg Watkins, the platform has become one of the most influential independent voices in hip-hop media. From breaking news and artist interviews to cultural commentary and industry coverage, AllHipHop has been a fixture throughout many eras of the genre’s evolution.
The honor is especially meaningful to Creekmore, who was born in Wilmington.
“It’s great to be honored at VBS Fest with my business partner Grouchy Greg and other honorees like Freeway and Grand G. It’s the essence of the culture and something that’s been personal to me since I was born in Wilmington. I’m excited that AllHipHop is approaching a milestone of 30 years of culture, technology, disruption and tenacious entrepreneurship. We’re honored with the Online Pioneer Award.
The award comes as AllHipHop prepares for its 30th anniversary, a milestone that few media companies achieve. Over the years, the site has documented hip-hop’s greatest moments while helping to elevate the voices of emerging artists, entrepreneurs, and even communities.
In addition to music and performances, VBS Music Festival serves as a gathering place where local achievement, cultural preservation, and community pride collide in the most positive ways. Through music and celebration, the AllHipHop recognition highlights that the story of Hip-Hop is not only shaped by those holding the microphone.
