Can Jay Z still be No. 1 in the streaming age?

Jay-Z’s rumored new album could test whether one of hip-hop’s greatest icons can still dominate the streaming space.

Here we go again. This is not a drill.

We’ve known for a long time that something was going to happen, but now it looks like we have real traction. Jay-Z is reportedly recording a new album. Details about the project are sparse, but my gut tells me this isn’t just another album. This may be a sure thing.

As you know, it’s been nearly a decade since Jay-Z released a full-length studio album. His last solo effort, 4:44, was released in 2017 and was widely praised as one of the most mature and introspective projects of his career. Since then, he’s appeared on specials, expanded his business ventures, and… of course, his billionaire status is a thing. But a proper Jay-Z album? We’ve been waiting.

The timing is interesting. Jay-Z is currently celebrating the 30th anniversary of his landmark debut album Reasonable Doubt. The anniversary is a reminder of why he remains one of the greatest artists of all time. Now they say he’s taking the legacy to the next level.

What I want to know is simple: when, who, where, how, and on what platform?

The music industry is nothing like the one Jay-Z left behind nearly 10 years ago. When 4:44 rolled around, streaming was still a work in progress. Streaming is everything these days. Algorithms rule. The marketing campaign is built around the playlist. Social media is malleable. Viral stuff is important to a lot of artists.

The game has changed.

We also know that Jay-Z has never been a traditional artist when it comes to releases. He tried exclusive distribution deals and collaborations with Samsung and TIDAL. He’s always looking for ways to challenge industry norms while getting his share of cheddar cheese.

This creates an interesting dilemma.

Jay-Z has the ability to create high-level Hip-Hop music. Can he dominate the streaming ecosystem? His core fan base grew up buying CDs, vinyl records and some digital downloads. They’re not necessarily the generation driving billions of streams every month. Now, they even have robot farms!

Leaving Jay-Z out is never a wise choice.

Jay-Z has reinvented himself multiple times throughout his career. From a charlatan philosopher in “Reasonable Doubt” to a global businessman in “The Blueprint 3” to a family man in “4:44,” he’s who he is. A new album coinciding with a generational shift…wow. If Jay-Z came back now, I think everything would be better. Very few artists can do this.

What do you think?
