The R&B genre has its legends, but beloved trio Boyz II Men may be the holy trio.
Hailing from Philadelphia, the group was formed in 1985 and was originally known as the “Unique Attraction” Quartet. After changing their name and releasing their first studio album, Cooleyhighharmony, in 1991, they quickly achieved record-breaking commercial success on radio and the Billboard charts.
The band quickly attracted attention with its silky-smooth harmonies, even vocal distribution, spoken word and rap parts that complemented the stacked vocals, and a fresh yet classically soulful style that the band dubbed “hip-hop doo wop.” The nation’s ears.
Singles like “Motownphilly” and “It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday” quickly became fan favorites. Soon after, the landmark single “End of the Road” became an instant classic, launching them straight to the top of the Billboard charts for a then-record 13 weeks.
As the band continued to release hits throughout the 1990s and 2000s, their momentum only grew. “I’ll Make Love to You,” “On Bend Knee,” “Water Runs Dry” and “A Song For Mama” are just a few of the songs that would continue to propel Boyz II Men to monumental heights .
Overall, the band has received numerous awards and honors, including (but not limited to) nine American Music Awards, three Billboard Music Awards, seven Soul Train Music Awards, and four Grammy Awards. They also have several major RIAA certifications, such as “Cooleyhighharmony” which went 9 platinum and “II” which went 12 platinum, making it one of the best-selling albums in US history.
Boyz II Men has toured the world numerous times, and the iconic band will bring their collection of classic ’90s hits to the Northern Quest Resort and Casino on Wednesday.
