In February 2023, Tallahassee Pain announced a seven-song project titled On Top of the Covers, which was released on March 17 of that year.
T-Pain surprised fans with a series of versatile covers, including “Sam Cooke,” “Sam Smith,” “Journey,” “Chris Stapleton” and “Black Sabbath.” He also invited his Nappy Boy label signee NandoSTL to join him in a cover of Frank Sinatra’s “That’s Life”.
“You’ve been asking for it bro and here you go,” he wrote. “A T-Pain covers album to end all cover albums… from T-Pain. “On Top Of The Covers” will be released on March 17th along with a series of private shows. More on that later… so please Stay tuned for more updates.
The cover project has been a long time in the making, dating back to early 2019 when T-Pain won The Masked Singer by covering songs by Montell Jordan, Joan Jett and Sam Smith, among others.
“This cover album has been years in the making. I started recording it right after I won ‘The Masked Singer,'” he told Rolling Stone. “It was put on hold for a while, but now that I’m independent, I can do whatever I want through Nappy Boy Entertainment, which is something I’ve felt strongly about for a long time.”
The 38-year-old singer continued: “When you hear T-Pain is making a cover album, the songs aren’t what you expect, and that’s what I think is cool about it.”
Although T-Pain stated on Stagecoach that the second part of On Top of the Covers will be released “soon,” he did not announce a release date.
