Rappers such as Soulja Boy, DDG, Sexyy Red and Sauce Walka have expressed their opinions on Audemars Piguet’s collaboration with Swatch, but the recent launch of new watches shows that it is very different from the rappers’ original expectations.
The collaboration between Audemars Piguet and Swatch “Royal Pop” saw initial photos of AP in different rainbow colors appearing on social media and sparking widespread discussion online. There are reports that their price will be approachable, making it affordable for ordinary hypebeast consumers. However, these photos are not from the company, which may lead people to mistakenly think this is what the watch will look like.
But on Tuesday (May 12), Swatch released a trailer for the official AP x Swatch “Royal Pop” watch collaboration. In the video below, the collection is actually eight bioceramic pocket watches in different colors, retailing for $400.
This is very different from what people think Audemars Piguet and Swatch are going to release. Of course, they were based on fake photos.
Nonetheless, there are reports that people are currently camping out at a Swatch retail store in New York City to be able to be the first to get their hands on the watch.
Earlier this week, several rappers weighed in on the Audemars Piguet and Swatch partnership. While some weren’t happy with the partnership, others saw it as a strategic move by AP to release a more accessible watch to the public.
DDG, an avid watch collector, was outraged by AP’s collaboration with Swatch. The Michigan rhymer believes their collaboration will only devalue his own expensive and rare AP collection.
“Only a watch collector can understand the reason for my frustration,” he wrote. “My AP watch is rare and discontinued, so [I] Resale fees must be paid. It’s like buying a Ferrari [and] They work with Honda [and] Spend $30,000 to build a Ferrari Civic. But it’s too bad I pissed you off! [Get] Yeah, AP! “
Meanwhile, Sexyy Red compared the AP and Swatch collaboration to the G-Shock watch craze of the mid-2000s.
“The Democratic AP is about to overwhelm Skerrit like the G-Shock of ’06,” she wrote.
Soulja Boy also agreed with sexyyy, “There’s AP all over the hood [cry laughing emoji]”.
The new Audemars Piguet and Swatch “Royal Pop” pocket watches will be available in stores on May 16, with prices starting at $400.
