“Always Lyft.”
A college student said she took a Lyft ride with a driver named Amanda. According to her, Amanda then eventually drove off with her purse.
Clark Atlanta University freshman Kamyriana Wilson (@myrii.bae) wanted to get out and play 404 Days, a free celebration of Atlanta culture at Piedmont Park. But a Lyft ride before the outing ended up ruining her plans. She shared her story on TikTok, and as of this writing, the app has been viewed more than 84,000 times.
What happened to an Atlanta student while riding Lyft?
Wilson said she took a Lyft ride on Saturday, April 4, to attend one of Atlanta’s most prolific events, 404 Days. The Clark freshman was excited to spend time with friends at the free event, a 15-year tradition attended by many Atlanta locals and visitors.
Wilson said in her TikTok video that during the ride, she sat directly behind the driver, whom she identified as Amanda. She said she had her red and black purse with her and some jewelry she wanted to put on before arriving. The TikToker said her purse fell under the driver’s seat but she didn’t pay much attention because she was still wearing jewelry. She forgot about it during the trip.
Wilson mentioned that she encountered some traffic jams during the drive, which delayed her arrival. So she and her friend decided to get off the bus about two minutes early and walk the rest of the way to their destination, she said. As soon as she got out of the car, she realized that she might have left her red and black wallet in the car. However, the driver didn’t give her a chance and sped off. She said she panicked and immediately called the driver.
Wilson said she sent the driver three text messages around 7:23 p.m. “Red and black purse,” she wrote. “Please… my wallet.” But the driver was already far away from her. That’s when Wilson decided to report the stolen wallet to Lyft.
Wilson said she immediately contacted Lyft when she realized the driver wouldn’t be returning. She ended up having to repeat the information about the driver over and over to the support team, but that didn’t lead to her getting any property back. She also received no reimbursement.
Wilson told 11alive that she had approximately $125 worth of items in her purse – $100 in cash, a pair of keys worth $25 and her debit card. The college freshman said the theft was particularly brutal because she didn’t have the funds to avoid it affecting her daily life.
“I feel like y’all should care about my case because I’m a broke college student,” the student said directly to Lyft in her TikTok. She then turned her attention to the driver, adding, “I’m an agent more than you. And you ride Lyft.” Running around. You can do it – you can steal my stuff from me through me about five rides or something like that, but you can steal my stuff from me, but I don’t decide what I take, but I don’t decide my way to take my stuff from Lyft five rides, but you can steal my stuff from me, but you can decide from me what I take
Wilson continues push for accountability
Wilson wanted to contact Lyft to see if her items could be returned, but she said that was fruitless. Lyft can sometimes help drivers connect with passengers when an item is lost in a vehicle, but it does not provide reimbursement or insurance for lost items.
A Lyft representative released a statement to 11alive saying they contacted Wilson and the driver as part of a broader investigation, but it’s unclear if any action has been taken since then.
Wilson also added in her comments section and later in the interview that she filed a police report, although there haven’t been any relevant updates on the situation. Since posting the original footage, Wilson has responded to other inquiries in the comments section but has not created any posts indicating that things have changed.
A rideshare driver stole my stuff. Now what?
When a Lyft driver takes your personal belongings, such as your phone or wallet, the best course of action is to freeze your account immediately and start tracking any receipts from the incident. For example, be sure to check that the license plate of the vehicle you enter matches the one provided in the app, as the license plate can be used to help identify the car’s owner if needed.
Another important step is to report the situation to Lyft Lost and Found. There are similar, comparable services available for Uber riders. Then, consider reporting the incident to the police.
When submitting a report, it is important to include as much detail as possible. However, even if you provide the police with all possible details about the theft, there is still a chance that you will not be able to get your items back. This is where homeowners or renters insurance can come in handy. Most policies cover the cost of replacing lost items such as cell phones and wallets. Well, a police report can be useful in filing an insurance claim.
It’s also smart to attach AirTags or similar trackers to items that are difficult to replace, especially when riding in a stranger’s vehicle. This way, it will be harder for you to lose your items and easier to find them if they are lost.
