Salt-n-Pepa slams UMG for the record company that is a rap duo to control its lead record.
The female MC filed a lawsuit against the music giant in May, claiming that UMG violated federal copyright laws and denied that they had obtained the copyright of the music on music rights after a certain period of time.
In new interview Good morning USAthe two discussed the lawsuit.
“When you were an artist, at the beginning, you signed a contract saying that the copyright will be restored to you in 35 years. We did everything legally to get our copyright back. But they just refused, so we had to sue them.”
She added: “We don’t have that leverage. We don’t have that kind of knowledge. We didn’t have that control in the 1980s. So, it was ridiculous to sign contracts since 1985 and 40 years later.”
Pepa also interjected: “They want to keep it. They want to stick with it. They try to fight us.
UMG attempts to dismiss the lawsuit.
In “Best News,” Salt-N-Pepa will be the first hip-hop show to be awarded the honor at the 2025 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
“It’s a great feeling because…it’s for your music, not just a hit. It’s about your journey, your legacy, what you do, you know, the influence you have…40 years, we’re still here.”
Saar added: “I think authenticity, especially in the arts. I think it’s an important part of people going into salt n-pepa because we are real. I want to inspire women, inspire women, encourage women to be themselves, and do this, you know? You know? Not afraid to work in the world, whatever you do at work.
Salt-n-Pepa isn’t the only artist who sued UMG for Drake, bringing legal action against his long-term record label, accusing them of slandering Kendrick Lamar’s “not like us.”
