Polo G has been through a lot. You can hear it in his voice, you can read it in his lyrics. He doesn’t try to hide his experiences, which is why fans connect with him so deeply. The rapper got into legal trouble just this week. However, Polo G’s music has always been where he excels, and “Thug Memorials” is the latest proof. On the single, the rapper waxes poetic about the people he’s lost over the years, thanks to a classic R. Kelly sample.
Polo G digs deep with its first sound. The rapper detailed the emotional pain he felt attending his friend’s funeral. The description of the scene is heartbreaking and the background music is the icing on the cake. “I had nothing to say, I couldn’t even cry at your funeral,” Polo G gushed. “I come from that corner of hustler traps and marksman shots. Straight eights and shit bags, they ain’t gonna slide in any Subaru.” It’s an economic couplet that conveys not only the loss that haunted him and his late friend, but A sense of belonging. “Thug Memorials” is Polo G’s most sincere work, and therefore his best.
