YNW Melly’s days after YNW Bortlen accepted a plea deal, which could complicate Melly’s upcoming double murder retry in Broward County, Florida for several days.
The 25-year-old rapper filed a motion to fire his long-time lawyer and introduce high-profile alternatives, including Drew Findling, who previously represented Donald Trump.
Melly also hopes to hire another experienced Florida defense attorney, Carey Haughwout.
Findling has a deep connection with the rap community. He represents many artists, including Cardi B, Glorilla, YFN Lucci, NBA Youngboy and dozens of other artists.
Ynw Melly is in contact with Raven Liberty, Stuart Adelstein, Daniel Aaronson and three other lawyers who have represented him since his arrest in 2019.
The bill highlights potential conflicts of interest involving freedom, and although she has not been charged with any crime, the Broward Sheriff’s Office is currently undergoing witness tampering.
The legal overhaul came after the co-defendant Cortlen Henry (known as YNW Bortlen) accepted the plea agreement. Henry pleaded guilty to two charges Tuesday and was sentenced to 10 years in prison: the factual accessories and witnessed tampering.
Prosecutors gave up their initial murder in exchange for the sworn in lawsuit by Ynw Bortlen, stating only his own actions.
Ynw Melly is accused of murdering close friends Anthony Williams, 21, and Christopher Thomas Jr, 19.
The judge still has to approve the new lawyer.
YNW Melly’s retrial is scheduled to take place in January 2027. His first trial ended in a mistake in July 2023 after jurors failed to reach a consensus verdict.
If convicted, YNW Melly can spend the rest of his life in prison.
