Akira Hughes claims a promising Disney sketch show could explain why Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele are no longer working together.
Akira Hughes is a comedian. But the story she told wasn’t that funny. She peeled back the veil of Hollywood.
Known for her sharp digital sketches and past work with Comedy Central, she recently opened up about a show that didn’t happen and the series of events that allegedly derailed it. It’s a heavy thing, and the reason one of our favorite duos is no longer working together.
Hughes said things started out promising. Friends in the industry encouraged her to develop her own sketch show, and she jumped at the opportunity. She has reportedly tapped Keegan-Michael Key as a producer, a move that should immediately add credibility. It was expected that Key would even give the project a boost during his time hosting “Saturday Night Live,” but that moment never came. Instead, she claims he simply thanked his wife on air.
This is where things start to get…complicated.
Hughes claims Key’s wife somehow became a producer on the project, and while executives liked Key, the reception for his wife was far less enthusiastic. Still, the show reportedly landed a major deal with the Walt Disney Company, which should have been a win. But then a phone call changed everything.
She said Jordan Peele’s wife reached out after a dinner with Key and his wife, which Hughes took as a warning. The comparison she relayed was shocking, citing Phil Hartman’s tragic history and raising serious concerns. Hughes claims she was told bluntly that she “cannot calculate how much this woman cost that black man.”
Initially, Hughes didn’t think the situation would have much of an impact on production. That assumption was debunked when Key was away filming Wonka, when his wife allegedly became more involved and offered some unpopular opinions. Then came the turning point. Hughes claims the lawsuit halted production entirely, forcing Disney to step in and ultimately pay to end the situation.
Since then, the plan has unraveled. A writers’ strike delayed everything further, and eventually the network was discontinued. Dang, gang.
Hughes even pointed out a rumor circulating on Deuxmoi involving a bizarre restaurant incident involving fake allergies. Old girl reportedly sneezes due to allergies and plants are plastic!
Hughes’ reveal basically explains why Key and Peele are… no longer a couple. This may also explain why Key’s trajectory looks very different from Peel’s trajectory today. By the way, Key recently said. He would love to bring the show back. I like that too.
