Rap legend LL Cool J has finally woken up from a long slumber without music that lasted more than 11 years.
The New York emcee, known for his songs “Mama Said Knock You Out,” “Phenomenon” and “Headsprung,” has announced a new full-length project that is said to be coming soon. But before that, he’ll be bringing us his long-awaited new single “SATURDAY NIGHT SPECIAL” from the album, scheduled for release on Friday, June 14, 2024.
A release date and title for the album itself have yet to be confirmed (although LL claims it will be out this fall), but one can certainly expect an impressive lineup of rappers and producers. If the rumors are true, the album will feature emcees such as Nas, Eminem, Rick Ross and more, with Q-Tip handling vocal duties. The album was originally scheduled to be released in 2023 as part of hip-hop’s 50th anniversary, but was ultimately not released for unknown reasons. Reddit has expressed disappointment and anticipation that the album has not been released, and the news has given fans new hope.

“You know what it is,” LL announced in an Instagram video. While it’s the silence before the storm, it’s interesting that the Queens host’s new energy comes in the wake of the Big Three conversation. Now, LL is not only associated with Ice Cube’s Big 3 alliance, but is also one of the lyricists who inspired Eminem – who himself is often inserted into the Big 3’s conversations. The question is, what statement will LL make about this project? Will this be a retaking of hip-hop’s throne, or will we see a more introspective, personal performance from LL as an older emcee, moving beyond his thirst for accolades?
