Lil Zay Osama brought Christmas cheer to a Chicago family who survived a brutal attack outside a neighborhood school last month.
The Chicago rapper surprised Corshawnda Hatter and her two children with a holiday gift after seeing video of the November attack near Orville Bright Elementary School in South Deering.
Hatter and her 10-year-old son, Devon Lee Jr., were attacked by a group of children and ended up in the hospital with serious injuries.
“I wanted to do something for them and let them know that I support them and that I am behind them,” said Lear Zay Osama. “It means a lot. Where I was born, I didn’t grow up with something like this and no role models giving back to our community.”
Video of the attack, which has gone viral on social media, shows multiple children beating the mother and her son. Seven children aged 10 to 13 face assault charges in connection with the attack.
Lil Zay Osama teamed up with Chicago violence prevention organization Roseland Ceasefire to provide the family with dolls, clothes and video games.
The gifts brought a smile to the faces of 6-year-old Devin Ye and his older brother, Devon Lee Hart Jr. Hart said she was moved to tears by the rapper’s kindness during a difficult time for her family.
“It makes me tear up a little bit because I know there are more people who care about us,” she said.
The South Side native has been making headway in the hip-hop space with his raw street narratives and authentic Chicago sound. His latest project, YN Tape, showcases his growth as an artist while staying true to his Windy City roots.
