Kendrick Lamar gave his first interview since the Drake beef, in which he talked about his hit single “Not Like Us,” tapped into his feminine side and more.
Kendrick Lamar opens up in new interview
On Monday (October 21), Harper’s Bazaar shared a new interview between K-Dot and SZA, in which the Compton, Calif., rapper speaks candidly for the first time since his lyrical war with Drizzy in the spring. During the interview, Kendrick and SZA sat down with each other, with the R&B singer asking K-Dot what his chart-topping song “Not Like Us” means to him.
“My energy and the type of man I represent is different than us. Now, if you identify with the man I represent,” Kendrick said. “This man has morals, he has values, he has beliefs, he has a position. He is not pandering,” he continued. “He’s a guy who recognizes his mistakes and isn’t afraid to share them, and who is able to dig deep into fear-based ideologies or experiences to be able to express them without feeling like he’s not a man enough. If I want to be ‘not like us’ ‘, I’m thinking of myself and anyone who identifies with this.
SZA also asked Kendrick to address how to exploit his femininity.
“I have to balance both,” Kendrick said. “In the beginning, all I knew was masculinity, and because of my pop music, I always kept that wall up. But the more I delved into my music, the more I was able to express myself… and that’s it Feminine energy.
He added, “That’s where my superpower is. Because if my job is to communicate, I need to be able to communicate with everyone. I need to be able to sit in front of SZA and talk to you in a way that makes you feel good.” It’s comfortable, in a way that I feel real to you and you to me, and I can’t do that with a wall, I can’t do that with all my manhood.
Kendrick Lamar was his usual recluse self after his Pop Out- Ken & Friends concert in June. There are unconfirmed rumors that he will be dropping an album. In September, he was announced to headline the 2025 Super Bowl halftime show.
