“That’s why I always look angry when I’m out on my own.”
A Florida woman is raising concerns about romantic approaches from strangers after she shared an uncomfortable encounter with an older man at a restaurant bar.
On May 2, @missinginactionn1 posted a TikTok explaining that she went out to eat alone and ended up sitting next to a man she estimated to be in his 50s. “We just started talking,” she said.
What makes Florida bar interactions so strange?
According to her, the interaction initially felt completely normal. The pair are said to have arrived around the same time. Eventually, they began casually discussing topics such as investing, retirement accounts, and the stock market.
She said the man spent much of the conversation giving her financial advice, including advice about Roth IRAs and 401(k)s. Although she already understood a lot of the information, she continued to participate because she believed it was a harmless exchange.
She emphasized that there were no obvious danger signs at first. “The conversation wasn’t weird,” she said. “He wasn’t creepy; he wasn’t weird. It was just a conversation between strangers.”
Things allegedly took a turn when the waiter approached and thought the two were dining together. The woman immediately asked for a separate check, but the man reportedly insisted on paying her $18 for the meal.
She eventually accepted the move, describing him at the time as “very nice.” However, the situation became more uncomfortable when they both left the restaurant at the same time and continued their conversation outside.
According to the woman, the atmosphere changed when the man asked her if she wanted to go for a walk. She refused, citing the early hours of the morning. He then allegedly asked for a hug and she responded with a side hug. “Then he initiated the kiss,” she said.
She said the man brushed it off, saying he “tried it” and that he didn’t think they would exchange phone numbers. She confirmed his suspicions. The creator said the interaction was made even more shocking in hindsight because the man allegedly asked her about her living situation and whether she had roommates before leaving.
“Ladies, if a man asks you this question, just say you live with a man,” she said. “Just say it.”
She clarified that she didn’t necessarily believe the man meant to harm her. However, she said the exchange reminded her that seemingly innocent situations can quickly turn uncomfortable and even dangerous.
How does a woman feel when she is approached by a stranger?
While many commenters believe there’s nothing wrong with approaching someone romantically in public, research shows that how women feel about these interactions is often highly dependent on context, safety, and how well social boundaries are respected.
Research has found that women are significantly more cautious than men when approached by strangers because of romantic or sexual interest, and are less likely to express interest in further contact after an initial interaction.
Other studies have examined how women react when approached by unfamiliar men in public, finding that women often immediately evaluate factors such as physical safety, the man’s intentions, the environment and the likelihood of risk before deciding how to respond. Research on public harassment and “stranger incivility” also found that women are more likely than men to feel emotionally affected by uncomfortable contact with male strangers in public places.
