Hip-hop icon CeeLo Green recently shared an emotional tribute to his childhood friend and beloved Spelman College instructor, Joycelyn Wilson, who tragically passed away in a boating accident on Lake Oconee. Wilson, a respected professor and cultural historian, was known for her deep passion for education, music, and the community. Her untimely death has left a profound impact on her family, colleagues, and the students she mentored throughout her career.

CeeLo Green, who grew up in Atlanta, fondly remembers Wilson as more than just a friend — she was like a sister to him. In a heartfelt social media post, Green expressed his grief over the loss, describing how Wilson had always been a guiding light in his life. “I can’t believe my sister, Joycelyn, is gone. She meant so much to me and to so many people,” Green wrote. “She was not only brilliant but a beautiful soul who gave her heart to everyone around her. I’m going to miss her so much.”

Wilson’s passing occurred on February 28, 2025, after she went missing during a boating incident on Lake Oconee. Authorities began a search when she was reported missing, and her body was later recovered after several days of intensive searching. The boating accident, which is still under investigation, has left the local community in shock.

Wilson was a respected member of the Spelman College faculty, where she had been an instructor for many years, teaching courses on African American culture and music. Known for her dedication to her students, Wilson had a passion for empowering young women and promoting the importance of cultural studies. Her classes often intertwined music, history, and social issues, drawing from her own experiences in the world of hip-hop and academia.

CeeLo Green shared that Wilson had been a constant source of support throughout his career, offering advice and encouragement during his rise to fame. “She always knew how to bring people together, and I’ll forever be grateful for the wisdom she shared with me,” Green continued in his tribute.

The news of Wilson’s death has sent ripples of sorrow through the academic and hip-hop communities. Fellow professors, students, and friends have taken to social media to honor her memory, celebrating her legacy and the positive impact she had on so many lives.

Green, who has been outspoken about his love for Atlanta and his ties to the city’s music scene, expressed his hopes for the community to remember Wilson not only for her academic accomplishments but also for the way she touched the lives of those who knew her. “She gave everything she had to her community. Joycelyn lived her life with purpose and love, and that’s how we should all remember her,” Green said.

As authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Wilson’s tragic death, tributes and memorials from friends and fans continue to pour in. A public memorial service is planned in the coming weeks to honor the life and legacy of Joycelyn Wilson, with many expected to attend to celebrate her contributions to education and culture.
