The family’s attorneys have been exploring a detail that has haunted those who followed the case: Wells’ cell phone. Crump made it clear that an 18-year-old wouldn’t leave a cellphone behind easily, but somehow the family found it before police could use it as evidence.

That phone is important because Horn Island has spotty cell service and zero surveillance cameras, making it perhaps the most important piece of evidence into understanding his final moments on the island.
Crump’s independent investigators are fielding 50 to 100 calls a day from people claiming they have information about what happened.
So many hints tell you that the public didn’t believe the initial explanation of how a young athlete died after what was supposed to be a routine boating outing.
Sheriff John Ledbetter told ABC News that “Nolan Wells’ family deserves a thorough, truthful investigation,” acknowledging the growing pressure on his department.
CNN law enforcement analyst Charles Ramsey said there appeared to be nothing particularly unusual about the case from a procedural perspective, but acknowledged that he understands why race has become central to public discussions about how authorities handle everything.
The Congressional Black Caucus issued a statement saying “too many questions remain unanswered” and expressed growing demands for transparency and a full accounting of what happened.
According to ABC News, Wells’ funeral is scheduled for Monday, July 20, 2026, at Center Pointe Church in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, to give his family and the community a chance to grieve while a grand jury begins to determine next steps.
