Elliott “YN” Wilson is re-entering journalism after being named Editorial Director of Hip Hop News, overseeing UPROXX, HipHopDX and Dime Magazine. The news follows the announcement on Wednesday (April 24) that all three brands have been acquired by media veteran Jarret Myer, joining Complex alum Rich Antoniello and will.i.am to form UPROXX Studios.
“I’m excited for this next chapter in my illustrious career and working with proven winners like Jarrett, Richie and Will,” Wilson told Billboard. “My focus is on taking three emerging brands – UPROXX, HipHopDX and Dime – to greater heights and helping shape the future of media and culture. The fun begins.
Wilson will continue with Brian “B. Point” Miller. Previously, Wilson worked at TIDAL and served as Editor-in-Chief of XXL Magazine from 1999 to 2008.
UPROXX Studios will operate as an independent company, with Antoniello as Partner/Executive Chairman and will.i.am as Partner/Investor. About two months ago, WMG CEO Robert Kyncl announced in an internal memo obtained by Billboard that Warner was looking for an acquirer to sell HipHopDX and UPROXX, after Warner Music Group acquired the three labels and other Warner Music Group assets.
“We are in an exclusive process for the potential sale of news and entertainment websites UPROXX and HipHopDX and will have more news soon,” Kyncl said in February.
Will.i.am’s FYI AI technology and FYI Radio will also become an integral part of the UPROXX Studios operating system in the growing media industry.
“Innovation is in our DNA,” will.i.am said in a statement. “Our ongoing pursuit of developing new media and platforms will reshape the future of creative expression. We are building groundbreaking products and experiences that force the media world to evolve with us. This is our mission as cultural pioneers.
UPROXX Studios CEO Myer expects the company to become a pioneer in the media space with its investment in technology and forward thinking.
“We are doubling down on our commitment to growth. Anticipating significant investment in our brand, our team and the experiences we deliver – both for creators and audiences,” he added. “Through its partnership with FYI, UPROXX Studios embraces cutting-edge technology and demonstrates its commitment to nurturing creativity and pushing the limits of digital expression.”
