A bankruptcy trustee has officially requested a judge’s permission to sell Damon Dash’s entire life story rights for just $37,000 on August 5, 2026. The motion was filed in Florida bankruptcy court using a controversial Florida precedent that allows sale of personal story rights to satisfy debts. Dash owes over $8M in back taxes, child support, and judgments.
The trustee cited Dame’s 2024 Chapter 7 filing and his failure to make payments on a $823K judgment to director Josh Webber. The filing would give the buyer rights to produce films, books, podcasts, and documentaries about Dash’s life, including Roc-A-Fella, Jay-Z, and Kanye West eras. Dash’s attorney called the $37K price tag “insulting and unconstitutional.”
If approved, the buyer would own Dash’s story forever, with no approval needed from Dash himself. The hearing is set for August 20 in Miami. Jay-Z and Roc-A-Fella alumni have not commented, but legal experts say this could open the door for more hip-hop life rights being sold in bankruptcy.
