Jay-Z’s final show at Yankee Stadium was postponed after a security breach outside the venue triggered a lockdown, leaving thousands of fans waiting.
The final night of Jay-Z’s historic tour continues to be pushed into the night and has still not started as of 11:35 PM Sunday night. As of the time of this report, the campaign has not yet begun.
Jay-Z’s three-night run at Yankee Stadium ended in a strange, unexpected twist on July 12 when a security breach outside the venue forced officials to postpone the final show.
Thousands of fans waited outside a Bronx stadium after a large crowd rushed through a security checkpoint, police said. According to ABC7 New York, the incident prompted authorities to temporarily lock down the stadium. This prevented people from entering or exiting while NYPD officers and venue security regained control of the situation.
The concert was scheduled to start at 8 p.m., and an AllHipHop source expressed dismay.
“I’ve been in this damn stadium for almost five hours. I can’t take it anymore,” the source said, speaking on condition of anonymity. “Tupac and Biggie could come out at this point and I would still have the attitude.”
The source said the show appeared to be continuing and then suddenly stopped.
“D-Nice played a 30-minute set at 8 o’clock and then played three hours of elevator music,” the source continued. “I feel like if they cancel or reschedule, the decision should be made now. I can go home now.”
Eyewitnesses shared videos on social media showing overcrowded people and queues at the entrance to the stadium. Some attendees reported hearing someone forced their way into one of the gates. At the time, this was called the “vagrancy craze.”
Police reportedly reopened the entrance shortly before 10 p.m., but the show did not start immediately.
As of press time, authorities had not released details on the number of people suspected of violating security regulations or whether any arrests had been made. No injuries were reported. Officials also did not say whether anyone entered the concert without authorization.
The delay was the only major disruption during Jay-Z’s acclaimed Yankee Stadium show, which commemorated the 30th anniversary of “Reasonable Doubt.”
As of the time of publication, neither Jay-Z’s representatives, Live Nation, nor Yankee Stadium have released detailed statements regarding the incident.
