Jay-Z kicked off his three-night Jay-Z 30th Anniversary celebration with a career-spanning performance featuring Nas, Beyoncé, Blue Ivy and many more.
All the hip-hop rumors couldn’t have predicted this night.
Jay-Z kicked off his highly anticipated “Jay-Z 30” concert series at Yankee Stadium on Friday night with a sold-out opening night. The night celebrated the 30th anniversary of Reasonable Doubt while providing fans with a full slate of entertainment.
At around 9:30 p.m., Jay took the stage wearing a New York Yankees bomber jacket and matching cap, wasting no time in making history. He opened with “Can’t Knock the Hustle,” but then subverted the 1996 classic by introducing Beyonce, who voiced Mary J. Blige. Of course, Bey added her own touch to the performance.
“New York City, what’s going on?” Jay-Z shouted. “That’s how you start!”
On “Feelin’ It,” Jay-Z introduced daughter Blue Ivy Carter, who delighted the crowd as she confidently played the piano. Father and daughter hug before Blue Ivy exits. As advertised, “Reasonable Doubt” remained the highlight of the night. Jay-Z performed on classics including “Can I Live?,” “Dead Presidents” and “Regrets,” truly reflecting the work’s lasting impact. One AllHipHop staff member in attendance said: “Man, it’s perfect. Jay’s back…he’s been in the gym.”
This training is not limited to 1996.
He also performed “Excuse Me Miss” from The Blueprint, reminding everyone that the night was ultimately a celebration of thirty years of greatness, not one album.
One of the biggest moments of the night came when Nas appeared on “Dead President,” a complete moment since Jay sampled Nas’s vocals from “The World Is Yours.” The two New York legends – once bitter rivals – now share the stage as icons.
Jay-Z also welcomed friend Memphis Bleek and mentor Jaz-O, an artist who helped shape his journey and worldview.
Friday’s show marks the first of three nights at Yankee Stadium. The second show features The Blueprint, while Sunday’s “Extra Innings” finale will blend material from both albums and other fan favorites to satisfy huge demand.
The celebrations don’t end in New York. The Jay-Z 30 Tour is also scheduled to visit London, Paris and Los Angeles later this year, extending the anniversary celebrations to three continents.
