Fresh legal reports reveal that late rap pioneer Coolio left behind substantial financial debts, which are currently complicating his estate administration.
Court filings show multiple creditor claims against royalties from “Gangsta’s Paradise” and other catalog hits. Family is working with administrators to resolve. Coolio, born Artis Leon Ivey Jr., died on September 28, 2022 at age 59.
According to court documents, Coolio had no will, so the estate was divided among his children. His manager Jarez Posey was appointed special administrator to collect residuals and handle financial matters, including “demand deposit accounts, financial accounts, insurance policies and royalties”. Posey sought appointment to avoid “waste and/or loss” of personal property.
The complication stems from Coolio’s famous 1996 Gangsta’s Paradise deal: 95% of royalties went to Stevie Wonder for sampling “Pastime Paradise”. It wasn’t an accident — it was the contract. That left Coolio with only 5% of publishing on his biggest hit, which sold 6 million copies and hit #1 in 14 countries.
Despite the Grammy win, Coolio “spent the rest of his career collecting welfare checks” according to a 2024 documentary. He had 6 children and was married to Josefa Salinas from 1996-2000. Career album sales totaled 4.8 million, with 978 million on-demand streams.
