The Knicks made history with a record-breaking comeback, and now fans are wondering if the presence of Nas and the Wu-Tang Clan helped spark the magic.
The Knicks just accomplished something that has never happened in NBA Finals history.
After trailing by 30 points at halftime, New York surged to defeat the San Antonio Spurs in one of the most improbable comebacks in basketball history.
What’s even crazier is that just in the previous game, Nick looked vulnerable. They lost to the Spurs, and suddenly the aura of inevitability was gone. For the first time in this series, people began to wonder if New York would actually lose.
Of course, some fans blamed the loss on an uninvited guest.
Donald Trump attended the last game and people started joking that he had “brought doom to the Knicks.” There’s solid evidence to prove it, and sports fans have always loved their superstitions. Every fan base has its lucky jerseys, lucky seats, lucky ceremonies and unlucky guests. It looked like that was one of those times, as they lost for the first time after sweeping other teams.
This brings us to the other side of the coin.
Legendary Queensbridge rapper Nas was in the building during Game 4. At the same time, the legendary Wu-Tang Clan also presented a halftime performance. Woo woo woo…
Now it’s New York.
These are cultural institutions. They represent the courage, creativity, resilience and swagger that have defined New York City for generations. Their music is the soundtrack to countless triumphs, struggles and triumphs.
Did Nas and the Wu-Tang Clan somehow help the Knicks win?
Logically, the answer is probably no. But we know it’s just a simple milk-on-toast answer. The deeper answer is culture and complexity. A message to Dukes’ mom.
Victory in a basketball game depends on players’ shots, coaches’ adjustments, and opponents’ mistakes. The Spurs’ questionable decision-making and poor execution clearly contributed to their own downfall.
The momentum is real. The energy is real. Faith is real. Wu-Tang and Nas are the most real!
When a building comes alive and people believe something special is going to happen, strange things can ensue. I think the presence of Nas and the Wu-Tang Clan reminded everyone of New York. The fans were definitely louder and I think they gave the arena an extra jolt when it was needed most.
The Knicks made history.
While all due respect to Cardi B, who competed in another halftime match at MSG Club, I don’t think even she could overcome the sense of doom that hung over the Garden that night. She did pray, so maybe that was her contribution to the victory.
Nas and the Wu-Tang Clan inspired The Knick!
Imagine the team trailing by 30 points as Nas watches in the crowd and Wu-Tang Clan rocks the building. Imagine having to walk off the field after getting blown out in front of the greatest hip-hop icon the city has ever seen.
Yeah, I don’t think the Knicks want any part of that.
Look at Nas having fun!
