YG is gearing up to release his new album Gentlemen’s Club , his first project in six years. When asked about his long gap between albums, the Compton rhymer said he was taking advice Kendrick Lamar gave him about rushing albums to get out of deals.
In a video conversation with DJ Hed that premiered on YouTube on Thursday (June 4), YG said he played his new album K-Dot and admitted that there was a time when he simply abandoned projects in order to exit his Def Jam contract. In response, Kendrick advised him not to rush albums, but rather to give his best effort on each album.
“I was talking to Dot and I was playing him the album… and I was telling him what I was doing, like releasing the album just to make the deal because my deal was screwed up,” he explained. “He (Kendrick) said, ‘Man, you shouldn’t do this. You have to give it your all every time.'”
YG stated that “Gentlemen’s Club” is a concept album with real stories and opinions. The 4Hunnid leader hopes to earn respect and praise through the project.
YG’s seventh album “Gentlemen’s Club” will be released on all digital streaming platforms on June 19th.
