The fourth location of Nipsey Hussle’s Marathon Burger restaurant opened yesterday in Long Beach, California. However, a shooting occurred near the fast food chain during its opening, leaving one person dead and two others injured.
According to a news report released by ABC7 Eyewitnesses on Monday (March 2), a shooting broke out outside the grand opening of the fourth Marathon Burger in Long Beach, California on Sunday (March 1). About half a block from the grand opening, multiple gunshots were fired, sending hundreds of people fleeing.
Three men were shot and taken to local hospitals, where one died, police said. The other two men are in stable condition.
Eric VanDyke, a relative of Nipsey Hussle and a witness, told ABC7 the shooting overshadowed the positive events in the community.
“It’s disappointing because I know Nip, (Brack) Sam wanted this to be a happy moment, so unfortunately something happened that made people focus more on the negatives than the positives,” he said.
Despite the tragic shooting, the opening of the fourth Marathon Burger was considered a huge success, with celebrities including Snoop Dogg, YG and even Stevie Wonder coming out to show their support.
The day before the gun violence, city officials named the intersection of Slawson and Crenshaw “Nipsey Hussle Plaza” to honor the late rapper’s life and musical influence. Street dedication draws hundreds of fans to South Los Angeles to honor Crenshaw Nip.
