Ab-Soul recently shared his thoughts on Kendrick Lamar’s shout-out on his surprising GNX album.

During a recent Instagram Live, the Carson City, Calif., native expressed his gratitude and true feelings about Lamar spitting bars on album track “Heart Pt.” 6″, he revealed that he studied Soulo lyrics to help him perfect his pen game.

“Ab-Soul grunting and rapping in the corner/Fumbling with Black & Milds bags/Crumblin’ kush ’til he smiles/His words are legendary, wish I could rhyme like him/Studying his style to define mine Pen/That’s when the only goal is to get Jay Rock in the door, we’re back,” Lamar raps on the record.

Lamar also rapped about his feelings, becoming a thorn in the side of the Black Hippy (Top Dawg Entertainment’s rap supergroup) due to his creative tenacity. From a soul perspective, however, things are much different, and he explains how their relationship is more symbiotic while reflecting on their brotherhood and creative journey.

“I want to talk about, you know, like, you know, everybody’s talking about ‘Heart Part 6,’ you know, I’m so honored that, you know, that’s my brother, like in real life , you know what I am,” I said,” the soul said in part. “Like, I’d take a bullet for you.”

Transitioning into their artistically dynamic soul went on to explain how Lamar taught him just as much, if not more, during their presence.

“But other than that, I guarantee you, he doesn’t study me as much as I study him,” he said. “You feel what I’m saying? He taught me. As a professional recording artist, he taught me the most.

Ab-Soul also delves into the early trials and tribulations of the black hippies and breaks down the roots of his close connection with each member.

“We literally slept on the floor doing this, man,” he said. “All of us, man. Rock and roll [Jay Rock]Q [ScHoolboy Q]. Do you know what I’m talking about? Soundwave was the first producer I worked with when he was making beats on PlayStation. Music MTV Generator. Do you feel me?

He continued, “He introduced me to Punch, and Punch asked me to come back. You know, Moussa and I were best friends long before I was introduced to the camp.

Ab-Soul added that he believes divine intervention brought them together, saying: “I ended up in a historical space where we were able to inspire a generation, let alone the entire world, just spiritually.”

Ab-Soul ended on a confident note, seemingly acknowledging Lamar’s admission of being his lyrical teacher, declaring: “I’m the ship, right? I’m the best rapper. That’s it. Ask anybody. Ask anybody . I’m not saying this out of arrogance. Do you really feel what I’m saying?

Black Hippy, the iconic rap group consisting of Ab-Soul, Kendrick Lamar, Jay Rock and ScHoolboy Q, left a lasting mark on the hip-hop music scene during their brief run in the early to mid-2010s. Known for their lyrical depth and versatility, the band has produced such standout tracks as “UOENO (Remix),” “Vice City” and “Say Wassup.” Listen to Soulo’s full words on the matter in the post above.
