Juice Crew member DJ Polo has reportedly passed away. Although it has not been confirmed, rumors are circulating on social media that he is suffering from some kind of medical condition.
Longtime Bronx radio personality DJ Chuck Chillout announced his death on Saturday (July 27), writing on Instagram: “This is so hurtful for DJ POLO.”
Comments from peers poured in. Pete Rock wrote, “Damn man slow down Jesus Christ let me breathe,” while Erick Sermon, De La Soul’s Maseo, Sway Calloway and the Fat Boys’ Kool Rock Ski left a series of praying emojis. Other reviewers include Hi-Tek, Crazy Legs and Kurtis Blow.

Eric B.’s Instagram post also prompted a series of tributes. It read: “My brother DJ POLO, we had some great times and you will never be forgotten, God speed.”

DJ Polo, whose real name is Shawn Brown, is a well-known DJ and producer best known for his key role in the pioneering New York City hip-hop group the Juice Crew. Juice Crew was formed in the mid-1980s by influential producer Marley Marl and radio DJ Mr. Magic, and included several groundbreaking artists such as Big Daddy Kane, Biz Markie, MC Shan, Roxanne Shanté and Kool G Rap, among others .
DJ Polo is best known for his collaborations with Kool G Rap, the duo of Kool G Rap and DJ Polo. Together they released several influential albums, including Road to the Riches (1989), Wanted: Dead or Alive (1990) and Live and Let Die (1992). Their work is known for its complex lyricism, intricate storytelling and contribution to the mafia rap genre. As a DJ and producer, DJ Polo played an important role in shaping the sound and style of Kool G Rap & DJ Polo, contributing to the legacy of East Coast hip-hop during its formative years.
