While the world is speculating about Quavo and Lana Del Rey’s relationship, we only know one thing: these two make a great collaborator. On their new song “Tough,” the duo takes a bold approach, fusing Western sonics with hip-hop in the most carefully chosen (yet bold!) way.
Reverb-washed drums cover sonic building blocks as Lana and Quavo harmonize on the hook, revealing a beautiful and uncanny combination of sounds and genres. The pair previously teased a clip on Instagram, in which the pair can be seen standing next to a farm fence with guns ready to shoot. Rapper Tobe Nwigwe expressed his appreciation for the song, calling it “hard,” while fans were left in awe, ecstatic, and reveling in “trap Lana is back!”
The track is accompanied by a music video that perfectly captures the beauty of the sound, shot and edited in a montage inspired by old memoir-style home videos. The staccato, almost slow-motion and bright visuals are reminiscent of the quality of old post-VHS videos, and it blends seamlessly with the country-style guitar. Both Lana and Quavo bring the same soul to their performances and express themselves like never before. Check out the song below!
