The new year may bring new layoffs. The New Yorker who works in tech showed up five minutes late to a Zoom meeting, and it changed his life.
As technology becomes more prevalent in our daily lives, tech jobs are becoming increasingly important, but tech companies are also known for mass layoffs. Just last year, some tech giants laid off thousands of employees. According to an article in Indeed, in early November, Amazon laid off about 10,000 employees, Meta laid off about 11,000 employees, and X laid off about 3,700 employees.
Jeff (@jeffffqu) appears to be part of this year’s new technology layoffs. The audience was on edge as Jeff tried to figure out what happened after the all-hands meeting.
Slack, Google: “None of my logins work”
Jeff arrived at Zoom five minutes late. He only answered the call for a minute and then the call ended. In one minute on Zoom, he heard as much as he needed to know.
“My whole team was asking me, ‘Are we getting fired?’ and then the CEO explained to me why our fourth quarter results were so low and how he was going to personally make sure we were going to be OK, no matter what. You know, the typical ‘I’m the CEO and you just got fired’ speech,” Jeff said.
After the meeting, he tried to log into Slack and Google Calendar but couldn’t
“None of my logins worked, so I couldn’t communicate with anyone on the team, my boss,” Jeff says before the video ends.
“It’s crazy to be late for layoffs yourself,” one comment said.
Another commenter said: “Imagine if times were bad, instead of doing mass layoffs, executives would take pay cuts.”
“File for unemployment and enjoy your vacation,” said another.
The video has 2.3 million views and 202,500 likes.
Anji layoffs
In an update video, Jeff confirmed that he was indeed fired by Ainge.
“Yes, I did get fired. Yes, I was actually late to the termination meeting. I worked for a company called Angi… which was a tech company in the home services space. There were 350 people in total who were laid off, including myself, my team members, and several other members of different teams,” Jeff explained.
As Jeff explains, Angi is a technology company in the home services industry. It focuses on providing customers with discreet service to help them complete household tasks. The platform was formerly known as “Angie’s List.” Think of this company as an alternative to Task Rabbit.
An article from Business Insider confirmed Angi’s layoffs this year, with, as Jeff said, 350 jobs lost.
“Angi said on Wednesday it would cut about 350 jobs ‘to reduce operating expenses and optimize its organizational structure to support long-term growth.'” The company also said it was cutting staff “in light of artificial intelligence-driven efficiency gains,” the article said.
The layoffs are expected to save the company $70 million to $80 million annually.
What’s next for Jeff?
Jeff seems to be looking for a way to make the most of his new free time.
“As for what’s going to happen next, I really don’t know. I want to give myself some time to rest. I’m definitely not going to be directly involved in recruiting,” Jeff said. He went on to explain that he would be focusing on his fitness journey and releasing more content.
AllHipHop has contacted Jeff via TikTok private message and email, and Angi via email. This story will be updated if either party responds.
