Teyana Taylor turned a five-year musical hiatus into a full-scale career transformation, including an acting and directorial debut, while still delivering her most personal album to date.
The singer and actress retired from the music industry in 2020 after feeling unsupported by her record label during the launch of her third project, The Album. The decision was rooted in faith and fear, she said, but it ultimately led to a new chapter she’s now embracing.
“I’m so grateful that I get to see all my prayers answered and all my tears wiped away. It’s hard because I said I retired and I didn’t know what was going to happen next. I’m scared, but I’m not afraid to take the step,” Taylor told ELLE’s Women in Hollywood. “I’ve always had a strong relationship with God and felt Him say, ‘Okay, do you trust me? I know you’ve been trusting me, but do you really, really trust me? Are you ready for me to take that teddy bear away from you so I can give you something bigger and better?'”
Since retiring from music, Taylor has had roles in One Thousand and One, Coming 2 America and One Battle After Another, as well as the upcoming series All’s Fair. She is also preparing to make her directorial debut with “Get Lite.”
“I’m telling you, one day I’m going to be a big director, and (the fact that) that’s going to happen, it shows his power,” she said.
Taylor returned to music in August with her fourth studio album, Escape Room , which she called her “most vulnerable work” to date. But despite her comeback, she hasn’t slowed down in her acting career.
She will star in “Break” alongside Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, and will also appear in “72” with Kevin Hart.
Taylor’s renaissance in film, music, and directing shows no signs of slowing down, and “Get Lite” marks a major milestone in her creative evolution.
