Hours after the parade celebrated his historic boxing victory, Omaha police evacuated Terence Crawford from the gun, prompting an internal investigation.
Traffic stops shortly after police reports watching a vehicle drive shortly before 1:30 a.m. on Sunday. The driver was eventually identified as Crawford, who was cited for reckless driving, according to a statement from the Omaha Police Department.
Since then, videos of the incident recorded from the car have been distributed on social media. The video shows the officers of the gun ordered four crew members from the car.
One of the passengers was reportedly a member of the Crawford safety team and was found carrying a legally owned gun.
Police said all individuals in the vehicle are legally allowed to own a gun. However, officers claimed they found a gun on the floor near the driver’s seat, which led to a high alarm response.
Traffic stayed for hours after thousands gathered in downtown Omaha to mark Crawford’s recent victory over Caneloálvarez. With this victory, Crawford became the first male boxer in four belt eras to win an undisputed title in three separate weight classes.
Omaha Mayor John Ewing and Police Chief Todd Schmaderer acknowledged the incident in a joint statement on Sunday, confirming that the department is conducting an internal investigation.
“We know about the videos circulating on social media involving traffic parking involving newly crowned super middleweight boxing champions,” the statement said.
A spokesman for the Omaha Police Department told ESPN that the video was recorded by someone in a Crawford vehicle. The department has not released any body camera lenses or more details about the personnel.
As of Monday morning, Crawford has not made any public comment on the incident.
