ShittyBoyz is not for everyone. The name says it all. Some listeners will be put off, and some will be completely convinced by the trio’s absurdity and love their music. One thing is for sure, the trio will never change. 3 Man Weave is more like the wavy, quirky hip-hop that ShittyBoyz is known for. It’s a bit long and can get repetitive, but the brilliant clips are so catchy that they’ll stick in their minds whether you want them to or not. This can be seen from the powerful opener “07 LeBron”.
The opening track’s artwork and title might lead you to think that 3 Man Weave is a concept album focused on a basketball court. It’s not. ShittyBoyz quickly deviated from this theme and continued to delve into any subject they liked. It mostly works. “Polynesian” has a relaxed rhythm that brings the trio’s rhythms to full effect. “Big Dawgs” presents more of a West Coast sound, with an aggressive Tommy G signature. However, “New” and “Lab Live” are clearly the standouts. They use rich ’80s samples as the basis for aggressive ShittyBoyz bars, and the combination never fails. It’s great to hear that the trio was involved in the entire project of the piece. But as it stands, 3 Man Weave is an interesting showcase for ShittyBoyz perfecting their formula.
