Hip-hop legends De La Soul and Pharoahe Monch team up with Da Beatminerz and The Chorus for new single “My Year,” which is released alongside an animated music video.
The song features lyrics from Rasheed Chappell and Corey Glover of Living Color and is the second single from Da Beatminerz’s upcoming album “Stifled Creativity”, which will be released on June 21, 2024.
“Da Beatminerz”, composed by Walt “Mr. Walt” and Ewart “DJ Evil Dee” Dewgarde, along with early team member Baby Paul, revolutionized 90s street hip-hop.
The collaboration is a reminder of the heavyweights’ contributions to the genre, reflecting decades of shared history and mutually respectful partnership.
Anthony Edwards animated the video for “My Year”. It taps into the artist’s persona and lyrical energy, segmenting scenes to match the song’s tempo, tempo and message.
“The music and lyrics help facilitate some great results and help break up the scene based on the rapper’s rhythm and pattern,” Edwards said.
Edwards adds layers to the narrative, creating visually striking loops that resonate with the vocal performances.
Mr. Walt of Da Beatminerz commented on the collaboration, emphasizing the lifelong connection with the artists involved.
“I’ve been friends with De La since ’88 and Monch since ’87, so our relationship has been there. I met all of them at the record store where I worked (Music Factory in Jamaica, Queens),” “My Year” was one of the first songs we worked on when we started working on the album,” he recalls of how serious health issues delayed the project but made the final product all the more precious.
Despite the challenges, unique voices like Rasheed Chappelle and Corey Glover perfectly complement the project, making it a tribute to friendships old and new.
The upcoming album Stifled Creativity is a big deal for Da Beatminerz fans as it breaks their two-year hiatus since releasing a full-length project.
Following the previous single “Seckle… Once Again” featuring hip-hop royalty KRS-One and Smif-N-Wessun, fans’ expectations have been completely amplified.
Da Beatminerz’s production credits read like a hip-hop history lesson, spanning projects from heavyweights like Smif-N-Wessun (Dah Shinin), Black Moon (Enta Da Stage), to contemporary work from artists like Eminem and Ghostface Killah .
