Compton legend and arguably one of the greatest hip-hop lyricists of all time, Kendrick Lamar, now occupies the mind space of rap fans around the world with a bang.
The rapper recently released the official video for “Not Like Us,” furthering his feud with Drake, and it’s safe to say fans are dissecting every frame for clues about a potential full-length project.
Sure enough, one odd thing that stands out is the date on Kendrick’s jacket in the music video, which reads the date “8/8/2024,” which is widely interpreted as the release date of the upcoming project. Now, if there wasn’t overwhelming evidence to support this theory, one would think this was just a coincidence — especially considering Kendrick’s love for Easter eggs with numbers and dates on them. First, his latest concert “The Pop Out: Ken & Friends” was held on June 15th, and the music video was released on July 4th (American Independence Day).
Now, we all know how much Kobe Bryant inspired Kendrick (and vice versa), and we also know that Kobe’s jersey numbers were No. 8 and No. 24. As an L.A. legend who passed away early, the date holds special significance and is one of the rare opportunities for Kendrick to double down on his love for Los Angeles.
Now at the risk of over-speculating (which is hilarious, or even justified, and is a hallmark of the Kendrick fanbase), a personal observation is that dividing the date of August 8th by 24 years gives us 0.666 [(8+8)/24= 0.666]. This would only become relevant if it was truly intentional and would hint at Drake’s connection to The Six, as well as Kendrick’s opening of “Not Like Us” where he references the movie “The Sixth” The phrase “I see dead people” in “Sense”.
Now, we know that seems like a bit of an exaggeration, but if you’ve listened to Kendrick’s mental math on the Pusha T collaboration “Nosetalgia,” you’ll know it’s not too far-fetched for someone like Dot. Not to mention that 666 fits perfectly with the fact that Kendrick portrays Drake as a devil playing manipulative tricks.
Of course, all of this speculation is a follow-up to Kendrick’s series of diss songs, one of which was the song “6.16 in LA.” The song itself follows the same pattern that Kendrick is famous for: layer after layer of meaning and significance. For example, 6.16 has been speculated to be Tupac’s birthday, the date Kendrick first met Drake, a reference to a timestamp-based version of Drake, and more. The video below perfectly captures the hidden (or presumed) meaning behind the track.
Kendrick teased a new clip at the beginning of the “Not Like Us” video that could very well have a project on the way soon. Even Kendrick’s close associates, like DJ Hed, have hinted that something big is happening. All we have to do now is sit back and wait to see if these predictions turn out to be correct in any way, shape, or form. stay tuned!
