Ice Spice brings out the Ice Spice style in every song. This is what she does best and what her fans want to hear. However, the most interesting element of her album launch is the different instruments she uses. “Phat Butt” has a rattling trap beat, while “Gimme a Light” dabbles in dancehall. “Did It First” is another change of pace, and it may be her most effective yet. The instrumental, with its staccato drum beats, fits right into the “sex trap” genre popularized by producers like Cash Cobain. However, it’s the looped vocal sample that gives “Did It First” its unique millennial vibe.
“Did It First” sounds like a pop version of aughts hyperdub. Sure, it sounds pretentious to describe it in these terms, but there’s something undeniably retro about the song that works in its favor. Yes, Ice Spice is using the Ice Spice process, and as expected, it sounds good. She trash-talked her haters and described how she would disrespect them. Spice then passed the baton to Central Cee, who managed to ride the beat in a complementary yet unique way. Cee is a huge hit stateside, so working with him was a prudent decision. That’s not to say the results are interesting. There is chemistry between the two, as evidenced by the Y2K music video. Hopefully the rest of the album will follow suit.
