Hulu’s documentary Freaknik: The Wildest Party Never Told premieres Thursday (March 21). The film’s premiere on streaming sparked both jokes and serious reflections, making Freaknik a trending topic on X (formerly Twitter).
The Freaknik documentary showcases the contributions of multiple hip-hop artists. Jermaine Dupri, 21 Savage and 2 Live Crew’s Luther “Uncle Luke” Campbell serve as executive producers. Celebrities featured in the documentary include Lil Jon, Killer Mike, CeeLo Green and Too $hort.
Freaknik: The Wildest Party Next Told is directed by P. Frank Williams. The director explained his vision for the film in an interview with CNN.
“I’m a black cultural documentarian, and I want to provide vegetables and candy,” Williams said. “I think a lot of people are in love with candy, it’s at street parties, it’s wild on the highway, it’s crazy in the middle of the street in Freaknik. I wanted to create a more layered look.”
This documentary explores Freaknik’s evolution from a simple college picnic in the ’80s to the wild celebrations that swept Atlanta before closing in the late ’90s. The film aims to show why Freaknik has gained an almost mythical reputation over the years without ignoring the troubling parts of its history.
“In telling the full story of ‘Freaks,’ omitting the sexual assault and the things that really caused harm doesn’t allow the full story to be told,” said producer Jay Allen. “So we just want to make sure that when you watch this, No other documentary about Freaknik needs to be told.”
