“Dude, I can’t believe you’ve been gone for 20 years! I met you on the steps of Osbourne while handing out flyers and we rapped with each other. I’ve been with you since that day and if I hadn’t met you, my life would never be the same again. I believe you do the same!
The anniversary also drew a brief but heartfelt message from his son Nassan, who continues to pursue music.

Proof, whose real name is DeShaun Holton, is one of the founding members of D12 and a core figure in Detroit’s vibrant underground music scene. He earned respect through his improvisational performances at venues such as the Hip-Hop Shop, and his sharp, witty delivery and live atmosphere helped foster Detroit’s competitive rap culture. He also played a key role in Eminem’s rise, vouching for him in his early performances and helping him gain recognition in a scene that wasn’t always popular.
With “D12,” Proof has contributed to multi-platinum success with albums such as “Devil’s Night” and the chart-topping “D12 World.” He subsequently released his solo album Searching for Jerry Garcia in 2005, taking a more introspective look at his life and art while collaborating with the biggest names in hip-hop.
Plouffe was killed during an argument at a Detroit nightclub on April 11, 2006. An argument during a pool game escalated into a shooting between two men, authorities said. Proof was shot and later pronounced dead at the hospital. He is 32 years old.
Plouffe’s death sent shockwaves through the hip-hop community and marked a turning point for Eminem, who has repeatedly said the loss was one of the most painful moments of his life.
