Denzo Washington apologized when he inadvertently revealed that Ryan Coogler was working on Black Panther 3 while fulfilling a request to promote “Demon Warriors 2” and “The Piano Lesson.”
Washington’s revelations, including mention of a potential role written for him, have sparked discussion about the future of the famed Marvel series, although a third installment remains unofficial.
Speaking on the Variety Awards Podcast, Denzo Washington reflected on the misstep and shared his thoughts on Coogler’s talent.
“Ryan is a genius,” Denzel Washington said. “I called him to apologize for talking about the movie, and sitting next to him was his beautiful wife. He was still Ryan, humble and full of ideas. Whatever he wrote, I read.
Marvel Studios has yet to confirm the development status of Black Panther 3, and Washington has chosen not to provide further details about the project.
However, the actor did hint that his priorities are changing as he contemplates the twilight years of his career.
In a November interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he said he would be selective about remaining projects.
“At this point in my career, I’m only interested in working with the best people,” Washington said. “I don’t know how many more movies I’ll make, probably not that many. I want to do something I haven’t done before.
The “Training Day” star added that his exploration of new, ambitious roles includes reprising his role as Othello at age 70, as well as reimagining historical figures like Hannibal.
Additionally, he revealed that he is in talks with director Steve McQueen about a potential collaboration.
Washington concluded his comments by reiterating Coogler’s plans to create a character for him in the next chapter of Black Panther .
The original Black Panther, directed by Coogler and starring the late Chadwick Boseman, premiered in 2018 to critical and box office success.
Its sequel, Black Panther: Waganda Forever, will be released in 2022, starring Letitia Wright.
Coogler, who directed and wrote both films, is taking a break from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to co-produce a horror film with frequent collaborator Michael B. Jordan, The Sinner, due out in March.
