Snoop Dogg will be Australia’s largest sporting event next year, but his upcoming AFL finals performance has been controversial as Adelaide Crows player Izak Rankine is suspended for using homophobia.

Hip-hop idols announced sharp criticisms from LGBTQI+ advocates in the 2025 AFL Finals and made sharp criticisms in public, questioning the alliance’s decision to invite artists with misogynistic lyrics and gay rhetoric in the past.

The rebound has intensified after Rankine used slander in the game on Thursday.

AFL CEO Andrew Dillon talked about the growing criticism, defending the league’s choices and promising performance for all ages.

“We cannot write or play every lyric in a song written or played by any artist (Australian or international artist) who appears on our stage.”

“What I can say is that our pre-match entertainment in the AFL Finals will be family friendly and consistent with the audience at MCG and those watching the radio.”

Dillon stressed that the decision to book Snoop Dogg was based on who he is now, not who he is.

“Also remember that we hired Snoop Dogg as 2025, and he is the person he is today,” he said. “He has spoken publicly about his past, changed, and today he is a grandfather, philanthropist, who helped restore youth and is a global entertainer who performed over 100 million audiences at both the Super Bowl and the Olympic closing ceremonies.”

Snoop Dogg will be on stage at the Melbourne Cricket Stadium on 27 September 2025, which is the headlines of Telstra pre-match entertainment.

This will be his first live show on MCG, which is expected to attract 100,000 attendees and millions of people watching on TV.

Snoop Dogg was previously banned from Australia in 2007 due to his criminal record, but was later granted a visa and allowed to perform after 2008.
