After nearly two years of limbo, the Chicago rapper’s case has finally come to a conclusion. According to court documents obtained by XXL on Friday (May 31), Zay and his attorney pleaded guilty in Brooklyn federal court on Thursday (May 30). Zay faces up to 10 years in prison. However, federal guidelines may result in a prison sentence of 21 to 27 months. His sentencing date has not yet been set.
“On September 29, 2022, I knowingly possessed a machine gun in Queens County,” he said in court, according to the New York Daily News. “I knew it was wrong and illegal.”

Lil Zay Osama was originally charged on September 30, 2022, one day after a rideshare driver picked up the rapper and his associates in Manhattan and witnessed Zay holding a gun. After getting off the bus in Queens, New York, the driver discovered that Zay had left behind a modified Glock 22.40 caliber pistol with an attached “switch” (also known as “auto-flare”) device. The driver notified the police, who subsequently arrested Hood.
In November of the same year, the case was dismissed. However, in January this year, a federal grand jury indicted Zay on charges of possessing a machine gun and an unregistered firearm.
Two weeks before the indictment, Zay was arrested again on another weapons possession charge. Photos of his arrest went viral.
