Cam’ron details his journey from rapping to podcasting, sharing the story behind his success in sports media.
Earlier this month, during a panel at Black Enterprise’s 2024 Disruptor Summit, Dipset MC reflected on how he launched It Is What It Is in 2023.
“I shot three or four episodes myself,” he begins. “I actually invited Ma$e to be a guest on the show and he was like, ‘Man, this is really cool — do you want to be half of it?’ I was like, ‘Yeah, we can be half of it, let’s do it.
“He didn’t even have to put any money into it, but he was willing to do it. I did maybe four, maybe five episodes, and they gave me a million dollars, and I said, ‘No.’ “Then we were about 10 episodes in, and the total cost came to $3 million, and I was like, ‘Oh, we’ve got something here.’
He continued: “We actually did 35 episodes, so we had a deal, but I probably spent $127,000 because I just kept shooting and Ma$e had that number in her head […] When it hit six million dollars, I thought, “Ma$e we have to — there’s no point in not doing this deal.”
“He had a real number in his head. He said, ‘Cam, we have to [wait],’ so we ended up doing [a] $20 million deal.
Beyond sports, Killa and Murda’s roots go back to the same era, as they both made their mark in hip-hop.
Last month, Cam revealed that he even recorded an entire album with his fellow New York MCs, but they won’t release it.
“Me and Ma$e got an album,” he said during an Instagram Live session in late April. “He said we can’t put it out! I didn’t know what it was about. We did six or seven songs. We sang together, and then he said, ‘No.’ ” I don’t know what Ma$e kept them for. But we sang together, not together. I just wasn’t allowed to play them.
The 48-year-old presenter also said his co-host has a huge cache of unreleased music, some of which is “really good”.
“Ma$e has crazy songs. Their shit is hot. All of Ma$e’s songs are hot,” he continued. “I’m not going to be up front, he’s got some really, really, really good songs. What’s he doing with them? I can’t answer that. I don’t know what Ma$e’s keeping these songs for.
“I asked him, ‘Can I play them?’ and he told me, ‘No. ” Maybe they were just for his enjoyment. I hear them too and I love them. Trust me, if I could play this shit that Ma$e played for me, I would.
