Mustard may have returned to the charts and radio airwaves thanks to Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us,” but he doesn’t mind people meddling with his work — especially when When it comes to a West Coast producer.
Legendary Los Angeles beatmaker Battlecat earned a thumbs up from the “Ballin'” hitmaker after sharing a mashup of K.Dot’s hit Drake diss that somehow made the West Coast pop even more, well, West Coast.
Produced by Amorphous and played by Soulection co-founder Joe Kay during a recent DJ set, the remix blends K.Dot’s sad bars with funky beats from Kurupt’s 1998 hit “We Can Freak It,” which The song was produced by Battlecat.
Reposting the clip on Instagram, Battlecat wrote in the caption: “Classics meet new classics and that’s what happens.”
Mustard, who penned the original hyphy-flavored, club-ready beat for “Not Like Us,” commented on the post with several fire emojis.
Producer Rockwilder also co-signed the remix, writing, “That’s the King of Pop! That gives me chills!!
“Not Like Us” has made a huge impact since its release earlier this month, not only being a devastating hit for Drake but also becoming a huge commercial hit.
The song debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 last week, giving Kendrick Lamar his fourth No. 1 single and his second (following 2017’s “HUMBLE”) .
This track rubbed salt into 6 God’s wounds and broke many records previously held by Kendrick’s nemesis.
Most recently, it became the fastest song in Spotify history to reach 100 million plays, surpassing Drake’s 2018 hit “God’s Plan.”
More importantly, in the eyes of many hip-hop fans and figures, “Not Like Us” earned Kendrick a victory in his fiery feud with Drizzy.
The song comes on the heels of the release of his previous diss track, “Meet the Grahams,” which became a hit, with both Cam’ron and Ma$e naming the Compton native a beef champ.
“It seemed like whatever he started doing, he would speed it up – pause – and really do what he was supposed to do,” the latter said on their sports show It Is What It Is.
“I think the last record he made [‘Not Like Us’] That’s the one […] That’s crazy. When I heard the news, I thought, “Oh, yeah, this is going to be tough.” That’s what I was expecting.
Joe Budden echoed this sentiment on his eponymous podcast, saying: “I think he earned it with skill. He was much better than Drake the whole time.
Drake responded to “Not Like Us” with a defensive “The Heart Part 6” before seemingly exiting the fight.
