Fat Joe believes rappers paint their nails to get attention
During a recent Instagram Live, Fat Joe expressed his thoughts on the rapper’s painted nails and wallets. In a video that went viral on Thursday (April 25), the Bronx rapper believes that male rappers who wear nail polish do so because it will make them famous and potentially increase their record sales.
“It feels like…a new trend, a new trend, a new style,” he says in the video below. “Paint your nails, use a bag, wear a bag.”
Fat Joe also mentioned that Young Thug wore a dress on the cover of his 2016 mixtape Jeffery.
While Fat Joe is entitled to his opinion, many rappers did it for years before painting their nails became a popular topic on rap blogs.

Male rappers wearing nail polish is now common in hip-hop
While some people might be uncomfortable seeing rappers wearing nail polish, it’s not uncommon in hip-hop.
Lil Yachty, founder of nail polish brand Crete, has faced online ridicule for years for expressing himself through nail art. The rapper first tried nail polish in 2021 after being mentored by A$AP Rocky, who introduced him to clear buffs and buffing techniques.
Meanwhile, Tyler, The Creator and Machine Gun Kelly followed in Yachty’s footsteps and launched their own nail polish brands, challenging traditional gender boundaries. Elsewhere, Lil Pump and Trippie Redd are also into nail paint, seamlessly integrating it into their unique wardrobes. Even YoungBoy Never Broke Again is fearless when it comes to rocking his painted nails.
While some fans (and artists) may be surprised that rappers wear nail polish, it’s not a new trend or a marketing ploy to increase album sales.
