Lady London offers a new improvisational style that harshly critiques what women in mainstream hip-hop have to go through.
The underground legend went on Cosmic Kev’s The Come Up Show on Wednesday (April 10) to the beat of Aaliyah’s “Are You That Somebody,” where she shared her thoughts on what it takes for women to reach their goals right now. The bar seems low.
Throughout the jam — which included a beat switch to JAY-Z’s “I Just Wanna Love U (Give It 2 Me)” — Lady London seemed to take a shot specifically at Nicki Minaj, with lines like, “You might want to keep your mouth, or mind your spouse” and “The head that wears the crown is empty.”
At one point, she even gushed, “I’m not the type to hit my feet when I aim for my boobs,” seemingly referring to Nicki’s diss song “Big Foot.”
While Ms. London isn’t afraid to share her thoughts on some of her peers in the hip-hop industry, she recently revealed that there’s one legend who might make her quit the industry entirely.
In a new episode of HipHopDX’s The Bar Code, out February 29, the Bronx native revealed that her biggest dream is JAY-Z.
“Jay is my ultimate dream role,” she said. “I feel like after that I’m going to put my jersey in the rafters. Like if I got a feature on JAY-Z and had him in the video somehow, I wouldn’t even want to rap anymore. That’s it .
Lady London has already earned praise from legends in the sport, including Big Daddy Kane, who impressed with her barbell performance at the Red Bull 60 Second Freestyle Series in November.
“Say it off my chest ‘Cause I’m the best ever/My wrists are the wettest so better call me liquid/You know God’s been blessing me every chance/I survey the crowd, Can’t ignore my influences/I see the patterns – no, I see them in the past/Like Saturn, I got all these rings, I slap ’em, thump, thump ’em/All this rap now The singer is backtracking, backpacking/I’ve got the games in my backpack,” the woman raps.
Kane reposted the video to Instagram and wrote: “Lyric lovers, listen to Barz first. Then listen again to the flow changes. We’ll wait until next week to talk about the Saturn line. @ladylondon #redbullsixtysecondsolo #twerkfreebarz”
“It gives me the vibe and rhythm of Ladybug Mecca [fire emoji]”A fan wrote in the comment area. “Ms. London speaks the absolute truth. The bars, the rhythm, the tone. She takes her time, but I guarantee she’s about to be the center of the conversation.”
